There are moments that remind you exactly why you chose to live where you live. For those who were standing at Liberty Plaza on that warm afternoon, this was one of them.
We at TheAnnArborLife.com had the privilege of filming and producing this extraordinary live performance by Karl Denson & His Tiny Universe at Sonic Lunch, Ann Arbor’s beloved free outdoor concert series presented by Bank of Ann Arbor at the corner of Liberty and Division in the heart of downtown.
Who Is Karl Denson?
If you don’t already know the name, you will after watching this.
Karl Denson is one of the most versatile and electrifying live performers in music today. As a saxophonist, flutist, and vocalist, he has built a career that spans genres, generations, and continents. He leads his own powerhouse group, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe (KDTU), and co-founded The Greyboy Allstars, two bands with devoted followings worldwide.
Since 2014, Karl has toured as the Rolling Stones’ saxophonist, stepping into the legendary role previously held by Bobby Keys. His collaborator list reads like a who’s who of music royalty, he was a longtime member of Lenny Kravitz’s band and has recorded and performed with Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Blackalicious, Slightly Stoopid, and Stanton Moore.
KDTU has shared stages with James Brown, Dave Matthews Band, Steve Winwood, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, Parliament Funkadelic, My Morning Jacket, D’Angelo, The Roots, Public Enemy, and Widespread Panic.
And yes — you may recognize Karl from the big screen. He appeared as the saxophonist in the fictional band Sexual Chocolate in the 1988 classic Coming to America and its 2021 sequel Coming 2 America.
In short: this is not your average free lunchtime concert.
